Remodelling of office building Mühlebachstrasse 9/11 Zurich, 1996

056 Office building Mühlebachstrasse

Two former residential buildings were remodelled in 1996 for the engineering office Ernst Basler + Partner Zurich. The buildings, near the excellent location of the train station Stadelhofen, became office quarters. Considerations regarding construction law and urban planning led to the decision to remodel instead of undertaking a new construction. Essentially, three measures were taken: a reassessment of the floor plan’s structure, renovation of the courtyard front and a reinterpretation of the street front. The acquisition and remodelling of the neighbouring property a few years later allowed for the addition of a small annexe. It creates a connection to the original courtyard front of 1996 and is an important factor when it comes to the architectural expression of the entire new construction. During both stages, sustainability was crucial when it came to choosing the location, remodelling the substance and installing smart housing technology, which carefully uses resources as well as landscaping (in this case, rainwater infiltration was integrated into atmospheric courtyards). Amongst others, this resulted into an upgrade of the street space.
