Renovation of school complex Schönau St. Gallen, 2002

077 School complex Schönau

The school complex Schönau in St. Gallen, built in 1960 by the architect Ernest Brantschen, is an important symbol of that time. Substantial frost damages on the exposed masonry of the exterior facade were the main reason for the renovation. Poor stone quality and—from a present-day perspective—an inadequate wall structure made a complete replacement of the outer shell necessary. This was carried out using the latest technology by introducing rear ventilation with frost-proof bricks and additional joint reinforcement. An energetically modern thermal insulation was installed according to the available options. Various spatial adjustments inside create ideal conditions for a modern school operation. Inside the classrooms, blackboards and lightning were replaced and additional closets were installed. The renovation’s aim was to maintain the school complex in regards to its historical preservation, energy efficiency and operation for a long time. All measures have been realised within the overall framework of the original concept and guarantee the continuing existence of the school complex.
